Avaaz is a non-profit online community action group that launched in 2007. The group’s mission is to balance the scales of injustice and transform the world for the betterment of society. Collectively, they organize email campaigns, fundraisers, petitions, and are reliant on internet activism in order to help those who cannot help themselves. As with other civic organizations, Avaaz is committed to taking down corruption and battling human rights abuses, one case at a time. Over the past decade, Avaaz has supported the take down of tyranny in the middle east with the use of technology and helped to promote civic freedom the world over. They also have a keen focus on the environment, animal abuse, ending poverty and women’s issues, and are at present supporting the repeal of a bill in The Kingdom of Jordan that allows Rapists the opportunity to marry their victims in order to escape punishment. Moreover, The group is focused on giving back to those in need. The group is 100% all action and they show this wherever possible. During the refugee crisis in Lebanon, the group raised $1 million dollars in aid. They also raised half a million dollars (in 2015) to rescue stranded refugees from the Mediterranean who were trying to make it to Europe. Avaaz is a true example of the power of crowd based activism in the new millennium and will continue the fight for everybody who is in need, or against anything that must be changed for the betterment of society.
